The Petite Bowl

A Guide to Our Bowls

September 18, 2026

A bowl for everything.

We all love a nice bowl. Different bowls work for different meals. Today's newsletter is all about our bowls, with a few more photos and some details for context.

PSA, each shape comes in several available glazes, but only one "lead" photo shows up on the "collection" page. Click on the shape to see the available glazes.

The Petite Bowl. Small but mighty, we can’t live without them. In our home they hold snacks, ice cream, mise en place while cooking, and anything else. Jewelry on the nightstand. Food for the cat. Go wild. A Petite Bowl holds 8 ounces (one cup), more or less. They sit in the palm of your hand.

The Dessert Bowl. In a beautiful restaurant, this bowl is nice for a refreshing house-made sorbet with a wafer cookie, but an everyday more practical use is for oatmeal or other warm foods at home. It has a great depth in proportion to its capacity; food stays warmer for longer in this bowl. It’s also a nice size for serving soup as a starter course or for putting some leftovers into the refrigerator. The bowl holds around 2 cups (16 oz), and is 6 inches in diameter.

The Breakfast Bowl. While it is certainly a great vessel for granola with yogurt, this bowl is also useful in many other ways. Often, I use it for eating a small meal like a late afternoon lunch, or put it onto a family style table with a side dish. Shown here with some pasta, this bowl it is a nice in-between size.

The Grain Bowl. A solid, use it every day type of bowl, the Grain Bowl holds up to 6 cups- or 1.5 quarts. With its lower shallow shape, we don't often fill it to the brim. I like to use it for rice bowls and more because it is spacious; the diameter of the bowl spans 8.5 inches. This bowl feels grounded because it’s a little heavier, and it has a wide foot. It couldn’t tip over if it tried. We included the Grain Bowl in our 5 Piece Serving Set because it also is a great serving dish; use it for roasted vegetables in a family style spread.

The Ramen Bowl. Shown here with the Petite Bowl for scale, the Ramen Bowl is wonderful for a large bowl of soup; it holds 6 cups (1.5 quarts) to the brim, just like the Grain Bowl. The Ramen Bowl is taller and deeper than the Grain Bowl, and sits higher on the table. It is a more elegant alternative that is lovely for a large bowl of brothy soup. The Ramen Bowl is also perfect for a big salad; I really recommend it.

The Salad Bowl. The foundation of the Basin Collection, a quintessential “Low Bowl” or “Bowl/Plate”. We started making these in 2014. Salad Bowls are 9 inches wide and shallow. In the Basin Collection there is one larger version and two smaller versions: The Entrée Bowl (10.5 inches), The Appetizer Bowl (7.5 inches), and the Olive Dish (6 inches). The other shapes are popular, but nothing has come close to the versatility of the original “Salad Bowl”.

This type of shape is often called a "pasta bowl"; I daydream about renaming it, but haven’t taken the leap. Shown here with French toast, I’ve heard from many of you that these bowls are your all day go-to; breakfast scrambles, pasta dishes, dishes for the individual in a family-style meal. A classic shape, great for just about anything.
